LOWELL — Students at UMass Lowell and residents of Pawtucketville have been put on alert by police because a man in his 20s has reportedly sought out female university students and exposed himself to them at least four times in the past month.
Police Capt. Kelly Richardson said the man appears to roam the neighborhood and seek out female students who are getting home early in the morning.
“He’s completely disrobing, and he’ll try to get in a position where students trying to get into their houses turn around to see him,” Richardson said.
So far, the man has not come within arm’s reach of any of his victims, spoken to them, or tried to grab anyone, but police are asking residents to be on alert.
Three women reported seeing the man in the past week and a fourth woman came forward about an earlier incident after hearing about the others.
The first incident, reported by a woman this week, occurred Aug. 7. The more recent incidents occurred on Gardner Street on Sept. 1; on Gershom Avenue on Friday night about 1 a.m.; and on University Avenue on Sunday about 3:30 a.m.
“We believe he lives in the neighborhood because he seems to appear and disappear very quickly,” Richardson said.
UMass Lowell spokesman Patti McCafferty said all students were notified of the incidents via email on Tuesday. Richardson said police also notified the Pawtucketville Citizen’s Council, a neighborhood group.
Richardson said the victim from Aug. 7 did not initially report the incident because she thought it was just a crude prank. She contacted police this week after realizing the man had struck more than once.
“This is not a prank,” Richardson said. “This is definitely someone we’re going to work very hard to find. The safety of the students is very important to us.”
The suspect is described as a white male, in his early 20s, between 5 feet, 6 inches and 6 feet tall, with short, spiked, blonde or light-brown hair.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lowell police at 978-937-3200, UMass Lowell Police at 978-934-2394 or Crimestoppers at 978-459-TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent to police via Text-a-Tip, by texting TIP411 (847411) with the subject “LPDTIP.”
Tipsters can remain anonymous, but can receive up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
