This call started out simple enough, a woman was allegedly assaulted on Westford Street. Officer George Asimoah spotted the suspect near Arch Street and started chasing him at 10:17 p.m.
A few seconds later the guy ran into bushes near the canal, and Asimoah called for a canine, and then a few seconds later reported the guy had jumped into the canal, and called for a boat too.
Tory Germann took the pictures above here and below here.
The fire department put two boats in the water. Police requested and got a state police helicopter to join the search. They eventually found footprints and some evidence the suspect had gotten out of the water a little way up the canal.
Police setup a perimeter and searched for a while before someone noticed more wet spots and some bent gutters on a building at 585 Middlesex Street, which has a one-story roof in back, even though most of the building is two stories.
A ladder truck from the Fire Department got police up on the roof 585 Middlesex Street, and as at least three or four officers checked the roof, the suspect came down some ivy in the rear where the roof is only one story.
He was pulled to the ground and handcuffed at 11:08 p.m., according to the time tag on my video.
Officer Asimoah is the officer searching Michael Gomez, 22, of 45 Freda Lane, Lowell, in the end of the video.
I’m still not sure what was alleged at the domestic incident on Westford Street because reports aren’t written and available yet, but Gomez is charged with domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
