Rollover Crash Closes Route 110

A rollover crash that trapped two people inside a car and sent at least two people to the hospital closed Route 110 (Merrimack Avenue) in Dracut tonight about 7:43 p.m.

Officers were sent to Merrimack Avenue at Stuart Avenue in Dracut for a report of a rollover accident, and arrived to find two people trapped in the car pictured below.

Police at the scene couldn’t comment, but after firefighters freed the two individuals trapped in the car one of them was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and the other was taken to Lowell General Hospital. They were both in the Pontiac sedan pictured above.

It appeared the Pontiac collided with the white Dodge pickup pictured below. I think it was the dodge that rolled over, as it has some crush damage to the upper passenger side.

Police closed down Route 110 in the area and were waiting for an accident reconstruction team from the state police to arrive at the scene as I was leaving. There was debris all over the road.

UPDATE: Police say a 28-year-old Haverhill man who was driving the pickup is going to face charges, but police are still trying to determine what those charges will be, so they’re not releasing his name or more information until that is decided.

A Dracut woman who was in the Pontiac was transferred from Lawrence General to a Boston trauma center by MedFlight. A Dracut man who was in the Pontiac was transferred from Lowell General to a Boston trauma center by ambulance. No word on their conditions or if the injuries are life-threatening. Both were seriously hurt.

Route 110 remained closed in the area for several hours while reconstruction was underway. It has since reopened.

UPDATE 2: Lisa Redmond reports from court today that Joseph Letourneau, 28, of Haverhill, was arraigned for OUI-drugs causing serious bodily injury and a marked lanes violation. Letourneau was not drinking, but appeared to be under the influence of several prescription medications, according to police.

Male in the Pontiac suffered broken ribs and chest injuries. Female in the Pontiac suffered a broken pelvis and broken legs. More from Lisa in tomorrow’s paper.

  1. About 12-15 years ago this section of 110 was known as ‘dead man’s curve’-and was the scene of @ least 3 fatalities a year- until the road was changed from 4 lanes down to 2. While still a dangerous section of road, there has been nowhere near the problems we had when there were 2 lanes in each direction- even @ the curve.
