Fire From Under The Ground

This subject might be a bit dramatic. Firefighters got called to Cobblestones downtown tonight  about 10:30 p.m., for a report of smoke in the basement.

It turns out things at Cobblestones were fine, the smoke was coming into the basement through a hole in the wall. Firefighters soon found smoke inside two manholes in the intersection of Dutton and Merrimack streets, and realized there was an electrical fire underground.

There was little firefighters could do until National Grid arrived, so firefighters and police blocked Merrimack Street at Shattuck Street, and Dutton Street at Market Street.

Crews were eventually able to put out the fire, but power was cut to the downtown block that includes the Hess Station and the Club Diner while National Grid made repairs.

Good thing this didn’t happen during afternoon traffic. As is, it didn’t seem to cause much trouble.

No word at this time of night on what caused this. I’ll have to try to find that out on Wednesday.

  1. Hello???? CTI hasn’t been on that block next to Club Diner in years, they are over next to Lowell High School on Kirk Street, and also at Palmer and Merrimack…

  2. Actually,CTI has been out of the Dutton Street building for less than a year, but more to the point– this fire had the potential to be so much worse. Thank you,LFD ,LPD & National Grid!
