Man struck in the dark

City police were called to VFW Highway, in the area of Beaver Brook, tonight at 7:05 p.m., for a report that a man had been struck by a car.

Officers found the man, who was not immediately identified, down in the inbound lanes of the road with a bag of groceries scattered around him. He was taken to Saints Medical Center with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

He was struck on an unlit portion of the highway, across from the UMass Lowell playing field, by a 29-year-old woman who was driving a silver Toyota sedan. The car had a large spiderweb on the windshield, as seen below.

Police said the woman was distraught, and eventually called an ambulance for her too, though she did not appear to be seriously injured as she sat in her car at the scene.

That portion of the VFW is extremely dark. I rarely use the flashlight I keep in my pocket, but I had to as I walked to this scene from where I parked at Top Donut.

  1. The ONLY safe places to cross the VFW Highway are at the intersections– and those are dangerous enough during daylight!
