Tonight at 11:44 p.m., police got a 911 call from someone who said they had just seen a man break a window of a vehicle parked in front of 194 Middle Street in the downtown.
The 911 caller said he saw the man reach into the vehicle and then take off. The caller described the suspect as a Hispanic male, 5’6, about 150 pounds, wearing a red t-shirt, and shorts. The caller said the suspect had curly hair.
Officer Chad Collins responded to the call, and quickly noted in radio broadcasts that just before the call was dispatched he saw a man fitting that description on Central Street. Another car found the guy pictured below on Central Street near Middlesex Street seconds later.
Police say that a few feet away from the guy pictured above was a plastic bag containing a GPS unit.
Angel Escalera, 39, of Lowell, pictured above, claimed he had just come from his parents house, and that “all I do is work for a living.”
Police said in radio broadcasts that Escalera’s criminal history contains previous breaks.
A witness identified Escalera as the person who broke into the car on Middle Street. I saw the show up being conducted a little bit after midnight. Here’s a picture of the car on Middle Street.
Escalera eventually stopped telling police he had come from his parents house, and started repeatedly calling officers “fat *explitive* pigs” and some other things that I can’t repeat. I’d post video of this, but the language used would require me to bleep out quite a bit of the audio.
Police told me the suspect threw a cobblestone through the window of the car on Middle Street.
Escalera was arrested about 12:15 and taken in for booking. The owner of the pictured vehicle couldn’t be located. The vehicle is registered to someone from Haverhill.
I know car breaks aren’t a major crime, but they’ve been a major issue in Lowell in recent years simply because there are so many of them.
