There isn’t really a local angle to this story, but it’s disturbing enough and close enough that I decided to blog about it anyway.
A 16-year-old girl from Maine was shot in the arm early this afternoon during a road rage incident that unfolded on Interstate 495 North in Merrimac.
State Police say they were called at 12:17 p.m.
Above is a picture from state police of the Nissan Xterra the girl was a passenger in when she was shot. You can see the rear window that was broken by the gunshot.
I’m posting about this anyway because police are hoping to speak to other witnesses and someone from this area may have been on 495 on their way to the beach or something. Plenty of locals travel that stretch of road on hot, weekend days, so special attention to anyone who went to Hampton or Salisbury this weekend.
Police say the gunshot was fired by a light-skinned African American or Hispanic male, with short hair, a gray T-shirt, and glasses, who was a passenger in a white Honda Accord with tinted windows and a red, white and blue license plate.
The Honda was driven by a white female who was wearing sunglasses.
The 16-year-old girl was shot in the upper arm. She was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport with injuries state police said were not life-threatening.
State Police say traffic was heavy at the time, and they are asking anyone who saw this incident or the suspect vehicle to contact state troopers at the Newbury barracks by calling 978.462.7478.
That is all the information that has been released so far, but I will update if I hear more. You can download a copy of the press release regarding this incident by clicking here.
UPDATE: Police tell me this girl was on her way home to Maine after visiting family in Lexington. There were three other members of her family along with her in her 2002 Nissan Xterra when this incident occurred.
There is still no real local connection here, but the drive from Lexington to 495 probably took the family through this area, and I know plenty of local folks travel north on 495. If anyone saw this Honda or has any information about this incident, please call police.
UPDATE 2: Monday: Police say the girl who was shot has been released from the hospital and has returned to Maine with her family. She was not the driver of the Nissan Xterra, she was a passenger when she was shot.
State Police say it appears both vehicles may have cut each other off at some point prior to the shooting. Click here to download a PDF file of the latest update from the state police.
I also added a photo of the vehicle the victim was in above.
