A driver walked away from this

The person who was driving the minivan pictured below when it crashed into and snapped a large utility pole on outer Middlesex Street, near the Chelmsford line, in Lowell tonight about 11:30 p.m., managed to walk away

I don’t necessarily mean without any injuries. I mean before emergency crews arrived.

Officers were searching the area for the driver and were investigating whether a man found nearby had been behind the wheel.

No one was in custody as of midnight, though. I’m not sure leaving the scene of a property damage accident is arrestable, so unless the driver was intoxicated or going to face other charges, he might not be arrestable even if located.

National Grid showed up to take care of the pole. That’s one of their workers pictured. He’s not actually moving at light speed. I just took the picture at a slow shutter speed and high ISO because it’s tough to shoot dark-colored vehicles in the dark.

UPDATE:

Added this photo that a reader, Dennis Brick, emailed to me after I shook his hand and met him at the scene. Nice to meet you, sir. Thank you.

  1. The man that the police stopped had a revoked license. The last I heard , the police were going to brinmg in a witness who had seen a man walk away from the accident.

  2. Ya I heard about this too at the clinic, it was Craig Monahan, busted up his ankle. Just glad his kid wasnt in the car, what a loser, probably all stoned on xanax or coke. Smarten up kid and take care of your family, better yet they are probably better off if he went to jail
